New virtual NICU nurse program at American Family Children’s Hospital reduces turnover
A virtual NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) nurse program launched in July 2024 at American Family Children’s Hospital (part of UW Health) aims to lower turnover among new-to-practice NICU nurses. Before the program, the turnover rate for new nurses was 38% from 2021-2023. Under the new system, new nurses get support via two six-hour virtual shifts per week (working from home via laptop), in addition to bedside mentorship and orientation toolkits. Early results are promising: no new NICU nurses have left in their first year under the program. The virtual nurses also help during busy times and provide emotional support and guidance to both staff and families.
